Four plastic bags filled with the victim's body parts were recovered on Sunday, following which the accused, Mohammad Sattar, was arrested from a slum in Bhayandar area in neighbouring Thane district.

The police found that the deceased was in a relationship with the sister of the accused, which the latter did not like.

"The case came to light after a passerby informed the police about a bad smell emanating from the side of the road leading to the beach. Soon a police team came to the spot and found some large plastic carry bags kept in the bushes," an official said.

When one of the carry bags was opened, a 20-litre paint bucket containing two chopped hands and a severed head, were found stuffed inside. The body parts were in a decomposed state. After a search of the surrounding area, more body parts were found in different buckets, he said.

The victim was a man in the age group of 20 to 35 years.

RA was tattooed on his arm and a dark blue jeans and green leather boots were found on the legs, he added.

"After that, the police formed multiple teams to establish the identity of the deceased and nab the accused. Based on the leads, the police zeroed in on the accused and nabbed him with the help of an informer," he said.

During the probe, the police found that the deceased and the accused hailed from Bihar and the deceased worked as a labourer in Pune. Both of them know each other, he said.

"The deceased had an affair with the sister of the accused, who opposed their relationship. He had warned the victim against it and asked him not to meet her. However, he did not listen to it and continued meeting her," the official said.

Fed up with this, Sattar decided to eliminate him and hatched a plan, he said.

"As per the plan, he invited the victim to his residence in Bhayandar in Thane district. After having liquor, he killed him by slitting his throat on October 31 night. To dispose of the corpse, he cut the corpse into seven pieces with a knife, stuffed them into four paint buckets and packed them in different plastic bags before finally dumping them near the Gorai beach," he added.

The accused was held under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act, including murder, and further investigation is underway, the official said.
