An Indian Army officer and 2 terrorists were killed in a fierce gunfight, when army troops foiled an infiltration bid across the Line of Control (LoC) in the Poonch district of Jammu region early Wednesday.

A defence spokesman said troops intercepted a group of heavily-armed terrorists between the Line of Control and the border fencing in Sunigali in the Mendhar area of Poonch district early Wednesday morning.

The infiltrators opened fire at the troops who retaliated and in the subsequent encounter two militants were killed and an officer identified as Major Akash Singh injured.

Singh later succumbed to injuries.

Another militant was killed around 0700 hours on Wednesday, they said, adding some weapons and a wireless set were recovered from the slain militants.

Search operations were still going on in the area when last reports came in.
