Narendra Modi likes making promises.

Every other week or so, our beloved prime minister produces some scheme or the other from his Modi jacket.

Among the promises made on Independence Day is a new medical ID card for all citizens, a Rs 100 trillion infrastructure programme, optical fibre connectivity for all villages in three years, etc etc.

Last year, Modi announced he would make India a $5 trillion economy in the next five years, which now seems a distant proposition given the current state of the economy.

Maybe, our Pradhan Sevak could consider setting up a ministry for prime minister's promises when he shuffles his ministers this month.

Dominic Xavier surveys the deluge of prime ministerial promises and wonders how many of them will be around a couple of years from now.
