A major controversy erupted after Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan signed the Kerala Police Amendment Act ordinance introduced by Pinarayi Vijayan's Left Democratic Front-led government in the state.
The new amendment mandates a three year jail sentence for fake news and hate speech online.
On November 23, after the national ruckus, Chief Minister Vijayan puts the amendment on hold. However, the ordinance has not been revoked yet.
Left or Right, governments at the Centre and in the states want to curb free speech, sighs Dominic Xavier.
