India reported more than 88.82 lakh (8.82 million) coronavirus infections in May alone during the raging second wave of COVID-19, accounting for 31.67 percent of the over 2.8 crore (28 million) cases reported in the country so far and making it the worst month of the pandemic.
May also saw 117,247 fatalities due to the disease, which is around 35.63 percent of the total 329,100 deaths recorded so far.
The daily cases peaked on May 7 when the country registered 414,188 infections in a span of 24 hours, while daily deaths were the highest on May 19 with India reporting 4,529 fatalities due to COVID-19.
The daily new cases remained below 300,000 since May 17 and the country has recorded less than 200,000 daily new cases for four consecutive days.
The active cases had peaked on May 10 at 3,745,237.
India reported the lowest daily new coronavirus infections of 152,734 in 50 days, taking India's total tally of COVID-19 cases to 2,80,47,534, while the active caseload has further declined to 20,26,092, according to Union health ministry data updated at 8 am on Monday.
The death toll climbed to 329,100 with 3,128 more deaths.
Recoveries continue to outnumber the daily new cases for the 18th consecutive day.
The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 2,56,92,342 with 238,022 patients having recovered in a span of 24 hours, while the case fatality rate stands at 1.17 percent, the data stated.
The active cases comprise 7.22 percent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has improved to 91.60 percent.
India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20 lakh (2 million) mark on August 7, 30 lakh (3 million) on August 23, 40 lakh (4 million)non September 5 and 50 lakh (5 million) on September 16.
It went past 60 lakh (6 million) on September 28, 70 lakh (7 million) on October 11, crossed 80 lakh (8 million) on October 29, 90 lakh (9 million) on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark (10 million) on December 19.
India crossed the grim milestone of 2 crore (20 million) patients on May 4.
