The Congress on Friday moved the Election Commission against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party chief Amit Shah for allegedly 'dragging' the armed forces in the political domain by using them to seek votes.
The BJP, meanwhile, moved the EC seeking action against Congress president Rahul Gandhi for his 'abusive' and 'completely untrue' comments against Modi, accusing the latter of attributing words to the Supreme Court in the Rafale case that it never said.
A Congress delegation, comprising Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Randeep Surjewala, made several representations such as over Union minister Smriti Irani's 'contradictory affidavits' to the Election Commission on her educational qualifications and a web series on Prime Minister Modi.
The party gave a memorandum to EC over Irani's contradictory affidavits, demanding that she should be disqualified from contesting.
"PM Modi, BJP chief (Amit Shah) and other leaders of the ruling party are shamelessly and openly, for the first time in 70 years, are dragging the forces into cheap politics," Singhvi told reporters outside the Election Commission.
"Dragging the armed forces in political crossfire, asking for votes and doing cheap politics (using the forces), only Narendra Modi and Amit Shah have done this," he said.
Singhvi said the Congress has asked the EC to stop such violations and also requested the commission to not just censure or pull up those violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), but dock the person guilty of violation a day of campaigning.
"If the person makes another violation, he/she should be barred from two days of campaigning, similarly three and four days for third and fourth violation," he said. Singhvi said the EC should also put a stop on the web series on Modi, citing the commission's order stalling a biopic on the prime minister.
Meanwhile, senior BJP leader and Union minister Nirmala Sitharaman expressed her party's 'disappointment' with the poll watchdog, saying it has looked the other way despite their repeated pleas to it against Gandhi for his 'baseless' allegations against Modi.
A BJP delegation, including Sitharaman, Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and its media head Anil Baluni, submitted to the EC a memorandum in which the saffron party also accused the Trinamool Congress of poll rigging in West Bengal during the first phase of polling of the general election on Thursday.
Pointing to Gandhi's remarks on Wednesday that the apex court has acknowledged that the prime minister is a 'thief' and that he gave Rs 30,000 crore to industrialist Anil Ambani, Naqvi said such 'lies' and 'baseless allegations' are not only violative of the model code of conduct, but also fall under 'corrupt practices', as described in the Representation of People Act.
The court had never said such a thing, he said.
"Congress president Rahul Gandhi is using abusive and such strong statements which are totally untrue, calling repeatedly the prime minister a 'chor' (thief) and also putting words in the mouth of the Supreme Court," Sitharaman told reporters.
Gandhi has been making such allegations without any evidence, she said, adding that the BJP has approached the EC three times so far against the Congress president.
The BJP felt 'let down' that the EC has not taken cognisance of its complaints against him, she said.
Taking a dig at Gandhi, Naqvi said the "brand new president" of an old party like the Congress has crossed all boundaries with his utterances.
The apex court had Wednesday allowed leaked documents to be relied upon by petitioners, seeking review of its Rafale judgement and dismissed the government's preliminary objections claiming 'privilege' over them.
Gandhi had then claimed that the court has 'accepted that PM Modi was a thief'.
Meanwhile, the party, in its memorandum to the poll panel, also complained of rigging and booth capturing by the insurgent group NSCN (IM) cadres in Naga dominated areas in Manipur.
The party also complained of violence and booth rigging at Cooch Behar and Alipurduar constituencies in West Bengal, it also alleged that TMC cadre in various locations in these two constituencies did not allow electors to cast their votes.
