Various political leaders and other VIPs who have been enjoying security cover for unjustified reasons for a long time may find it tough to avail this government facility any longer, as they Government is going to keep a check on it.

Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta is carrying out the review since receiving a list of over 100 VIPs, including former Ministers Shivraj Patil, Natwar Singh and Jagmohan whose security needs to be reviewed. It was observed that in some of the cases the VIPs were enjoying state security more as a status symbol and not because of any threat.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram after observing that a number of persons were enjoying VIP security without any justification has sought a review to scale down the facility extended to them.

Chidambaram, who has personally refused to take any security, is believed to be of the opinion that security should be provided only to those who face credible threats and those holding Constitutional posts.
