The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday accused the Centre of making a U-turn on the Telangana issue, denying that political parties were divided on the formation of a separate state.

BJP spokesman Prakash Javedakar said his party is 'very clear' on the issue of Telangana and still supports the creation of a separate state.

"The government has made a U-turn. There is no divide among political parties. My party is not divided and we are very clear that the state of Telangana should be formed," he said.

He also accused the UPA of announcing that it would initiate steps to form a Telangana state without doing 'proper homework'.

"The government did not do proper homework before coming out with the announcement. Now, they are blaming other parties. The announcement will create problems in the country," he said, adding, "The Centre is adding fuel to the fire."

'Centre can't backtrack on Telangana'

Meanwhile, just before Chidambaram's statement, Telangana leaders from different political parties, especially the Congress and the Telangana Rashtra Samiti have announced their plans to wage a united struggle for Telangana state.

TRS president K Chandrasekhara Rao, and senior Congress legislator from Telangana R Damodar Reddy announced separately that a Joint Action Committee comprising of the public representatives of all political parties from Telangana will be formed to carry forward the struggle and fight will continue till Telangana goal was achieved.

Chandrasekhara Rao made an appeal to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the UPA government not to do anything, which can provoke the emotions in Telangana region and immediately start the constitutional process for the formation of Telangana state.

"There is no mention in constitution of political consensus or assembly resolution for the formation of a new state. Supreme Court judgements in Maharashtra vs Gujrat and UP vs Uttaranchal cases have also made it clear that consensus or assembly resolution is not required," KCR said, urging the Centre not to make any statement, which can raise emotions in Telangana region.

"We know that Telangana can not be formed immediately and Parliament cannot pass the bill tomorrow or day after. It will take time but the Central government should start the constitutional process immediately. That is the best solution to the problem," he said.

He urged the people of Telangana to remain calm and patient and react only after the Central government officially makes a statement. "We have the energy and will to fight and we will continue our fight. No body can stop Telangana state," he said.

He stated that the Centre could not go back on its commitment on the formation of Telangana state. "The state is already completely divided on regional lines and the government officials, lawyers and employees were not in a position to work together," he said.
