Renowned mathematician Narendra Karmarkar returns home, joins TIFR
Dr Narendra Karmarkar, the internationally acclaimed
mathematician, has joined the Tata Institute
of Fundamental Research, Bombay.
Professor Sudhanshu Jha, TIFR's newly appointed director, has taken
some urgent measures to give new direction to the institute's scientific activities. Dr Karmarkar's appointment is part of this strategy.
For two months, the TIFR board engaged in hectic negotiations with Dr Karmarkar, who works with Bell Laboratories, New Jersey, to persuade him to come back home.
Tata Sons chairman Ratan Tata, chairman of the TIFR board, played a leading role in these discussions.
Dr Karmarkar will be responsible for setting up an independent
department of computer-oriented mathematics at TIFR.
As procedural formalities are pending, Dr Karmarkar said
he would comment on his appointment only after the TIFR
board met on September 16.
"I don't think it is appropriate to say anything until an official announcement
is made," he told a leading Marathi newspaper in Bombay.
