Gujral rules out planning panel's restructuring

Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral on Wednesday ruled out restructuring of the Planning Commission or making it a statutory body, saying both the Sarkaria Commission and Parliament had said the present status should continue.

Gujral emphasised the need for decentralised planning to take resources and planning to the panchayat level. He added that this will also cut down on bureaucratic delays and cost overruns.

He complimented the Kerala government, when E Ahmed (Muslim League) drew his attention to the success of de-centralised planning in the state.
