'There are 50,000 stateless Indians in Sri Lanka'

January 13, 2009
Professor Suryanarayan, a faculty at the Madras University, informed the gathering that the word Diaspora was wrongly used in this context. "Firstly, the word Diaspora is wrongly used. It applied only to the Jews who dispersed to various parts of the world because they were persecuted.

"It doesn't apply to PIOs because they left on their own accord to find a better life. Some have managed to do so and some have not. There are 4,00,000 PIOs who are stateless in Myanmar. There are 50,000 stateless Indians in Sri Lanka," he stated.

Suryanarayan believes that Indians are very good at adapting to different cultures. He advised the audience that while culturally they ought to continue being Indians, politically they should become citizens of their adopted country.
