'I do not know where to start looking'

January 12, 2009
My ancestors went to Fiji long, long ago, and I have no idea which part of India I belong to. I feel like an Indian in Fiji and not like a Fijian. Many Indians feel the same.

This is my first visit to India. I applied to the KIP programme because I wanted to trace the roots of my family. I also wanted to know how different Indians are, what they look like etc. My dream was to travel to India someday, and that has been fulfilled now.

India's size was a huge shock to me. Fiji is a small country.

I don't know where my roots are, I do not know where to start looking. Some people told me I look like a Bengali! I feel like coming back again. It is like my mother country.
