2,000 villages marooned

September 22, 2008
Nearly 2,000 villages have been left marooned due to the floods, sources said, adding that the highest number of such villages -- 645 -- are located in Puri district, followed by 473 in Cuttack and 421 in Kendrapara.

Major places which remain cut off include the holy town of Puri, tourist destination of Konark and port town Paradip while Banki town was submerged as flood water was flowing five feet above the main roads.

While there was an outcry for relief in the worst affected Kendrapara district, official sources said nearly 200 tonnes of food material were sent to flood affected people besides 6.77 lakh water pouches.
