'Droughts & deluge may become more frequent in India'

September 04, 2008
It underlines that analysis of the past tide gauge records for the Indian coastline regions gives an estimate of sea level rise of 1.30 mm per year while a whopping increase of about 4 mm per year is indicated in the future global projections.

"Simulations with climate models as well as observational data have indicated that droughts and spells of excessive rain like the deluge that struck Mumbai in 2005 are likely to become more frequent in India with the warming of the world," says the ministry in a report.

It paints a scenario of major population shift from the coastal mega cities to other large urban settlement.

"This would lead to already burdened cities such as Delhi, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Pune and Hyderabad to accommodate enormous numbers of migrants from the coasts."
