The Netherlands: Cannabis yes, cigarettes no
October 01, 2008
The Netherlands, a country known for its liberal attitude towards drug use especially cannabis, banned smoking in workplaces, public buildings and public transport on January 1, 2004.
Four years later, the Dutch extended the ban to hotels, restaurants, pubs and clubs. Interestingly, only cigarettes with a mix of tobacco and cannabis were banned. The ones with cannabis were exempted from the ban.
The fines for violating the smoking ban range from 300 to 2,400 Euro.
