The United States does not have a nationwide ban in place till date. That's partly due to the fact that it's Constitution does not give its lawmakers the right to regulate tobacco use.
However, states like Illinois, California, Colorado and Connecticut, among others, have imposed a total ban on public smoking.
In New York, smoking is prohibited in all workplaces, bars, restaurants, bowling alleys, and company cars. The fine to levied, if broken, goes up to $1,000 per violation.
However, you can light up a cigarette if you are in your residence or car and designated cigar bars.
New York, California, Delaware and Washington have the most stringent indoor smoking prohibitions in the United States.
Several states like Kentucky, Tennessee, South Dakota, Virginia, and Mississippi even ban smoking in government buildings.
Trivia: The city of San Luis Obispo in California was the first city in the world to ban smoking in all public buildings on August 2, 1990.
