Metro used to be an art deco theatre

November 27, 2008

The Metro cinema stands at one of Mumbai's busiest traffic junctions.

Like the Taj, it is a landmark --- mention 'Metro' and the cabbie will ensure you reach this movie hall which till recently was an art deco theatre, with marble stairs and velvet curtains that would slowly open before the show began.

Metro was converted into a multiplex a couple of years ago, but parts of its heritage lobby have been retained.

It is located a short distance away from the CST or VT station, at the other end of Mahapalika Marg, across another of the city's academic bastions, the famed St Xavier's College and shares space with other landmarks -- Furtado and Co, the piano and music shop, and Kayani, the Irani restaurant, venerable Mumbai institutions.
