Of nature's fury, death & shattered lives

May 13, 2008
"We are doing everything we can, but the roads are blanketed with rocks and boulders," Li Chongxi, Deputy Secretary of Sichuan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China was quoted as saying.

Landslides had also been reported along several highways in the neighbouring Shaanxi province.

Rescuers were clearing the debris to reach the quake-hit sites, while telecommunications links to the county had also been snapped.

The road from Dujiangyan to Wenchuan was blocked by rock and mud slides, holding up rescue, medical and other disaster relief teams, a witness said via mobile phone, according to the state media.

Wen asked the military personnel waiting in the city to enter the area as soon as possible even if they had to walk to Wenchuan, it said.

"The earlier the troops arrived, the more lives they could save," he said.

Flights from Beijing to quake-affected areas were delayed, while the airport at Chengdu, capital of quake-hit Sichuan Province, remained shut down as engineers assessed the runways, the Civil Aviation Administration of China said.
