Five years on, where Iraq stands
 |
The 'Statue of Liberty' replaced Saddam's statue in Al-Firdous square in the heart of Baghdad. Two years after Saddam's downfall, optimism grew among Iraqis as they cast their vote to choose a Parliament. They eventually got a democratic government; and a lot more in the bargain. Insurgents, who bit the dust in the elections, resorted to deadly attacks. Some prefer to call it civil unrest, others call it insurgency. The ordinary Iraqi faces the brunt; the promise of democracy still evades them.
