India and Florence: The unexpected connection

June 4, 2008
The novel, set in renaissance Florence and the court of the great Mughal empire opens with a young European traveler who calls himself 'Mogor dell'Amore,' the Mughal of Love. He arrives at Akbar's court in Agra with a tale that captivates the imperial capital -- a story about a mysterious woman, a great beauty believed to posses powers of enchantment and sorcery, and her impossible journey to far off Florence.

Why these two cities?

"Because they mirror each other. The thing that I find interesting was that how life was alike as in the two cities together. For example, these are two cultures, aristocratic families would lock up their daughters. In both the worlds you have the culture of the courtesans, a large number of them in India and in Florence -- a very unexpected connection," he said.
