However, the shadow of cases of sex abuse by Catholic clergymen continued to haunt the festival. While there were reports that the Pope might deliver an apology of his own -- to Australian victims of sex abuse -- Vatican officials refuted the claim.
Archbishop of Sydney Cardinal George Pell is also at the centre of a controversy after reports claimed that he had tried to hush up allegations of sexual abuse by priests.
