Ahead of the Pope's first public appearance, he was welcomed by Rudd.
In his welcome address, Rudd said, "You are the voice of hope at a time ... when hope is most needed."
Rudd, a committed Christian who attends Anglican services, told the Pope that he was welcomed by Australians of all faiths 'as an apostle of peace'.
