Crowd goes gaga

August 28, 2008
As the chairman of the US Senate's powerful Foreign Relations Committee, Biden's reputation as foreign policy wonk adds credence to the Obama ticket. To show the deficiencies of the Republican Party's foreign policy platform, Biden pointed out that "our country is less secure and more isolated than at any time in recent history".

Highlighting the alienation felt by America's allies, he added that “The Bush-McCain foreign policy has dug us into a very deep hole with very few friends to help us climb out."

Then, in a complete surprise and a break from protocol, Barack Obama made a surprise appearance on stage, joining running mate Joe Biden and adding a few words of his own.

"Hello Democrats," he said. "I want to everyone to now understand why I am so proud to have Joe Biden and the entire Biden family with me on this journey to take America back."

Though many had termed the early stages of the convention a disaster, when Obama asked, "I think the convention's gone pretty well so far, what do you think?" the delegates in attendance roared their concurrence.

The presidential nominee generally does not make an appearance on stage until he accepts the nomination. But because Obama's making his speech at Invesco Field, rather than in the Pepsi Centre, this was his lone opportunity to appear at the DNC's base.
