A 25-year-old doctor was allegedly gang raped and assaulted by three unidentified men in New Delhi, police said on Tuesday.

In a complaint filed with the police, the doctor, who was working at the gynaecology department at the ESI hospital in Basai Darapur locality, claimed that three men allegedly sexually assaulted her on the intervening night of September 19 and 20.

The doctor is battling for life at a city hospital as the attackers tried to strangulate her after which she fell unconscious, police said.

Hospital sources said her condition was very critical.

The incident took place when she was coming from the hospital to her hostel in Moti Nagar, West Delhi, where she was staying with her sister, a senior police official said.

The doctor was first rushed to the ESI hospital and then taken to another hospital.

"The victim is not in a condition to make any statement and the medical examinations are also to be carried out. There are injuries suggesting that rape has been committed," the official said.

A case of attempt to murder has been registered and rape charges will be added only after recording her statement, he said.
