Female power at Gokulashtami

September 3, 2007

On Saturday the one hundred fifty members of the Siddhivinayak Mandal Mahila Handi Pathak, a special all-female team, from Gandhi Nagar, Worli, central Mumbai, practiced their dahi handi moves in preparation for Gokulashtami.

In Maharashta celebrations for Janmashtami involves neighbourhood athletes getting together to form Dahi Handi gangs. These gangs on Janmashtami form human pyramids to take down pots of sweets and money (especially hung up for them) in the manner that Krishna as a baby stole butter from his mom's kitchen.
