The British lie quietly in Meerut

May 9, 2007
One of the oldest churches in North India is St John's Church, Meerut. The oldest grave here dates back to 1810. Also in the graveyard lies Colonel John Finnis.

Finnis was the first British officer killed by the freedom fighters. On his grave is written: 'Colonel Finnis, who fell while endeavouring to quell the mutiny in the 20th regiment, May 10 1857, 53 years.' According to Dr Amit Pathak -- who is keenly interested in restoring places in and around Meerut connected to the mutiny -- Finnis was killed at Parade Ground. "Today, there is a race course at the same site," he says.

Dr Pathak has also been instrumental in the building of a museum in the city to remember the events of 1857.
