Abandoned by their own, the law will not help them

March 6, 2007
About the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizen's Bill, Savithri Vaithi felt no law or coercion can make a family work.

"How many parents will file suits against their own children?" she asked. "When they have to live with their children later on also, they will not do that. Similarly, a mother-in-law can register a false complaint against her daughter-in-law. So, a Bill or police intervention or punishment is not the answer to one of the gravest problems our society faces now.

"I see this Bill as quite ridiculous," she continued. "It's a family problem and not a social problem. What is needed is counselling and not punishment."

As we walked out, a signboard on the wall of Vishranthi, urging youngsters to 'adopt a granny' by paying an annual amount of Rs 2,500, stared at us.

If you want to adopt a granny or sponsor their breakfast, lunch or dinner, you can write to Vishranthi Charitable Trust (Regd), 4/227, AVM Rajeswari Gardens, MGR Salai, Palavakkam, Chennai 600 041. Phone: 044-24490972 and 044-2499 6634
