The Supreme Court on Monday listed for hearing on August 16 a petition challenging the Andhra Pradesh government's decision to release 1,500 alleged notorious criminals from prisons on the eve of Independence Day.

Hearing the PIL filed by advocate R Chandrashekhar Reddy, challenging the indiscriminate release of several life convicts facing murder and other grave charges, a bench of Justices B N Agrawal and D K Jain posted the matter for August 16.

The list of prisoners includes several political leaders including Goru Venkat Reddy, husband of a sitting Congress MLA, who has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
