Viceregal Suite, Ananda in the Himalayas, Narendra Nagar, Garhwal

The Ananda, once the palace of the maharaja of Tehri-Garhwal, rises like a fantastic jewel out of the dark countryside as you climb 17 km of hair-pin bends from Rishikesh to Narendra Nagar in the Himalayas. Perched on a mountain, with a scenic view of the Ganga, wreathed in mist hundreds of metres below, Ananda is India's top spa and a haven of tranquility and relaxation. Some 79 body and beauty treatments are offered here.

Ananda's most comfortable suite is the Viceregal Suite with its own terrace on all four sides, a telescope, an outdoor jacuzzi, a private steam room and a dressing room. The tariff: $1,600 (about Rs 72,000) per night.

Famous guests: Kokilaben Ambani, Mukesh and Anil's mom; Brian Travers of UB40; Microsoft First Lady Melinda Gates; American comedian Bill Cosby's wife Camille; ghazal singer Talat Aziz, filmmaker Deepa Mehta.
