The Ananda, once the palace of the maharaja of Tehri-Garhwal, rises like a fantastic jewel out of the dark countryside as you climb 17 km of hair-pin bends from Rishikesh to Narendra Nagar in the Himalayas. Ananda's most comfortable suite is the Viceregal Suite with its own terrace on all four sides, a telescope, an outdoor jacuzzi, a private steam room and a dressing room. The tariff: $1,600 (about Rs 72,000) per night.
