Images: Remembering Ustad Bismillah Khan

August 21, 2006
Between an instrument and its exponent, there exists a delicate balance; each a half in the musical whole. But the shehnai and its maestro, the late Ustad Bismillah Khan, who passed into the ages on August 21, have become synonymous with one another. The musical genius took the lilting instrument, with its haunting overtones, out of weddings and the royal courts to great heights as a solo classical instrument.

The Ustad came from a family of court musicians. Rich tributes have poured in for a musician whose talent and rare humility had won him several admirers.
