Two militants were killed and six Central Reserve Police Force personnel were injured in two separate incidents of explosions in Assam as the banned United Liberation Front of Asom militants continued their belligerence in the run up to Independence Day on August 15.

Two suspected ULFA militants were killed when an explosive device in their possession went off near the Defence Cinema Hall at Mission Cross Road in the northern Assam town of Tezpur on Sunday night.

Police said the suspected ultras were carrying the explosive on a bicycle. The explosion occurred not far off from the Army 4 Corps headquarters in the town.

In another incident, 6 CRPF personnel were injured when ULFA militants hurled a grenade on a CRPF mini-truck near Bhojo Railway station at Sonari town in Sivasagar district of Upper Assam on Sunday evening.

Police at Sonari informed that ULFA militants positioned among the crowd in a weekly Sunday market lobbed the grenade on the CRPF patrol truck. The militants also fired upon the CRPF men while fleeing the scene

The injured CRPF men were identified as: Ranbir Singh (21), Arun Kumar (36), Rajpal Singh Dhak (33), Pawan Kumar (21), Indersen Singh (35) and Rajesh Kumer Singh (33). All of them were immediately admitted to the government hospital at Sonari. The condition of two of the injured were stated to be critical.

Upper Assam districts of Sivasagar, Tinsukia and Dibrugarh have been put on high alert apprehending more attacks from ULFA militants.
