Political parties in Nepal Thursday welcomed the concern shown by New Delhi over the political situation in the Himalayan kingdom and hoped that Indian Special Envoy Karan Singh's mission to restore democracy would succeed.
"As a close neighbour, events in Nepal will certainly affect India, and to show concern to Nepal's political crisis is very much natural," Nepali Congress general secretary Ramchandra Poudyal, who was released Wednesday after three months in jail, said.
"Nepalese people have moved far ahead in the movement to restore democracy. They need some concrete change. But any change to be brought also needs to address the Maoists' problem and bring them to the political mainstream," he said.
"We welcome the concern shown by India as a good neighbour to resolve Nepal's political crisis and to return sovereign power to the people from the autocratic monarch. We want Karan Singh's mission to bring back democracy in Nepal to succeed," he added.
But any change that has to come has to be brought through the power of the people and they have already displayed their courage, he said.
"Nepalese people have moved ahead in their movement for restoration of democracy, but if India can convince the king to return power, then there can be safe landing for him, but the movement will not stop untill full democracy is restored," Nepali Congress (Democratic) acting president Gopalman Shrestha said.
