A Legend Comes to New York

Born into a poor family of 13 children, B K S Iyengar was constantly afflicted as a child with ailments like tuberculosis, typhoid and malaria.

"Yoga saved my life. I took it for my health and I took it as a mission," he told Mira Nair, who has been a disciple of the Yogacharya for a long time.

During their 45-minute conversation, the director of Salaam Bombay and Monsoon Wedding said what she had learnt from the guru is reflected in her films.

"Serenity. Tenderness. Some beauty."

Nair said she considers Iyengar a healer and also as "a cascade of laughter."
