The United States on Friday denied a visa to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi [Images] to visit the country, obliquely citing his handling of the 2002 riots.

Modi was scheduled to leave for the US on a five-day visit on Saturday night.

Modi has described the decision as an insult to the Constitution, while his Bharatiya Janata Party has called it a national shame.
