Incessant rains continued to lash Nashik city and almost all tehsil towns in the district for the second consecutive day on Thursday, with rivers Godavari, Aaram, Mosam and Girna overflowing after water was released from Gangapur, Darna and Chankapur dams, district authorities said.

As per official figures, Nashik district till July 27 has received an average rainfall of 655.1 mm in comparison to an average of 351.3 mm the same day in 2004.

Till Wednesday, Igatpuri taluka recorded 1983 mm of rain, Trimbakeshwar 1723 mm, Surganas 1746 mm, Peint 1388.2 mm and Nashik 521.8 mm, they added.

An official report stated that tribal-dominated Nandurbar district was experiencing heavy rain for the past 24 hours and the collector of Nandurbar Sanjay Khandare has alerted the people there as well as others residing on river banks in the district, as heavy rain was expected in next 48 hours.

Government machinery is ready to face any eventuality and tehsil town-wise control rooms have been set up in Nandurbar district, Khandare added.

About 14,000 train passengers were stranded at different railway stations in the district due to disruption of rail traffic on the Central Railway section at Mumbai.

Several trains, which were halted at various stations, were sent back to their originating point on Wednesday, according to sources in Nashik.

Milk tankers as well as vegetable trucks could not reach Mumbai as the Mumbai-Agra national highway was flooded near Shahapur.
