Revolutionary Writers Association president and former Maoist emissary G Kalyan Rao, who was sent to judicial custody till August 31, spent Friday night in the Saifabad police station as the Chanchalguda central jail authorities in the city refused to take his custody. The city police had produced him at the residence of First Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Pramila Reddy at Marredpally in Secundrabad late on Friday night.
However, when the police party took Kalyan Rao to Chanchalguda central jail, the prison authorities turned him away, stating that entry into the jail had closed at 10 PM and the detainee should be brought there in the morning.
Consequently, Kalyan Rao was taken back to Saifabad police station. After a night's stay there, he was shifted to Chanchalguda jail on Saturday morning. The jail authorities took him into custody after completing the formalities.
The police arrested Kalyan Rao from the Hyderabad Press Club in Bashirbagh on Friday evening after he addressed a press conference condemning the ban imposed on the Revolutionary Writers Association (also known as Viplava Rachayitala Sangham or Virasam) alongwith Communist Party of India (Maoist) and other frontal organisations.
He was taken to Saifabad police station.
Now, both the top-ranking members of Virasam and former Maoist emissaries Varavara Rao and Kalyan Rao are in judicial custody.
