'We are a vibrant democracy'
To me being Indian means to belong to one of the oldest civilisations in the world and being part of a rich culture and heritage. India has influenced civilisations and cultures all over the world. It's unity in diversity, mix of various races, religions and languages is an example to other nations of the world.
Being Indian means to me to follow the principles of 'Vasudeva Kutumbam' (the entire world is my family) and pray for everybody's well being.
Independence Day is a time to remind ourselves of the sacrifices made by our forefathers for our freedom. It is a time to reflect upon whether we have come up to the expectations of our freedom fighters who suffered and at times paid with their lives to ensure that we have freedom of expression, profession, religion, education, etc and most importantly to shape our own destiny.
Despite many deficiencies in our system which many critics love to point out frequently and vociferously, we have a vibrant democracy and a free environment which provides equal opportunity to all the citizens.
On Independence Day, I reflect on whether I am discharging my duties to my nation and fellow countrymen to the best of my capacity.
