Liberal and reformist leaders in the church -- cardinals, bishops, priests and laymen -- are not impressed by Cardinal Ratzinger's elevation as the new Pope. Why do they dislike him?
Because as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, he disciplined dissidents and helped Pope John Paul II resist reforms that the liberals have been pressing for.
Because he has fought against liberation theology, which gained ground among priests especially in Latin America and other parts of the world.
Because he says theology is not a means through which the Church should involve itself in social activism and human rights issues.
Because his opponents consider him a theological scientist who love intellectual discussions. They argue he does not connect with the faithful and cannot touch the hearts of people.
Because he is opposed to the decentralisation of papal authority which cardinals like India's Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil have been advocating.
