Thumri queen Shobha Gurtu no more

September 27, 2004 10:03 IST

Noted vocalist Shobha Gurtu died at her Worli residence in central Mumbai on Monday following cardiac arrest, family sources said. She was 78.

Gurtu was admitted to a city hospital two weeks ago following cardiac problems but was discharged, as she felt better.

Known as the thumri queen, Gurtu's career spanned over five decades. A disciple of Kamal Khan, the numero uno singer had command over pure classical music but was better known for light classical.

She had also created the musical scores for several Marathi and Hindi movies. In recognition of her contribution, she was honoured with the Sangeet Sahitya Academy award and the Padma Bhusan.

She is survived by two sons.
