September 24, 2004

Dr Manmohan Singh turns 73 on September 26, 2004.

An economist par excellence and reformer, the prime minister is also an honest, straightforward politician.

He never sought the trappings of power. In fact, once his stint as finance minister in the P V Narasimha Rao government was over, Singh was often seen driving around Lutyen's Delhi in his humble white Maruti without a single bodyguard.

But now he holds the most critical job in the country.

Join rediff.com in wishing the genial Dr Singh a long and fulfilling life.
