The election commission on Thursday issued a notice to the Bharatiya Janata Party to explain whether its leader Uma Bharti's 'Tiranga Yatra' through Maharashtra amounted to violation of the model code of conduct.

The BJP has seven days to file its reply, sources said.

The EC took the action on the basis of an advocate's complaint.

Maharashtra is going to the polls on October 13.
