Paresh Barua.

Age: Not known.

Reward: Not declared.

Wanted: For waging insurgency in Assam.

Self-styled commander-in chief of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom.

He heads ULFA's armed wing and is known to have differences with its chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa.

The main reason for the rivalry between Barua and Rajkhowa is said to be control over the funds collected by ULFA through extortion and other illegal means.

The CBI has been on the hunt for Barua, whom arrested ULFA cadres have disclosed, has been smuggling heroin, procured in Myanmar, into Assam as part of his personal business operation.

ULFA sought shelter in forests on the India-Bhutan border from the early 1990s and established several camps there. In December 2003, the Bhutanese government cracked down on the ULFA camps. Since then, most ULFA leaders have shifted operations to unspecified locations in Bangladesh.

Intelligence reports say ULFA has also set up camps in Myanmar, the Mon district in Nagaland, the Garo hills in Meghalaya and the Tirap and Changlang districts in Arunachal Pradesh.
