Agitating farmers on Thursday set ablaze a police station and staged protests in Sriganganagar district, where four persons were killed in police firing on Wednesday.

Demanding more water for irrigation and protesting against the police firing, farmers set on fire a police station 20 km near Rawala town, the scene of Wednesday's violence, the police said.

However, no casualty was reported as there was no one inside the police station. Hundreds of farmers also demonstrated outside the Sriganganagar collectorate.

As tension continued, curfew was imposed as a precautionary measure in Anupgarh town. Army staged a flag march in the areas where curfew was imposed.

"The situation is under control as five to seven coloumns of army have taken over the troubled Rawala and Ghadsana towns", official sources said.

Members of various parties including Communist Party of India (Marxist), Bharitya Kisan Sangh, Congress and the Student Federation of India held demonstrations in Suratgarh, Raisingh Nagar, Vijay Nagar and parts of Sriganganagar district headquarters.
