Vajpayee, Advani to court arrest

November 30, 2004 23:39 IST

In an effort to step up pressure on the Centre, top Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, including former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and party president L K Advani, will hit the roads in New Delhi on Wednesday to protest against inflation.

Vajpayee and Advani, along with party MPs and MLAs, will court arrest during the protest rally.

The protest march has been arranged to coincide with the commencement of winter session of Parliament, party vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said on Tuesday.

Vajpayee will be courting arrest after nearly 30 years. The last time he went to prison was during the Emergency. Advani will also be courting arrest after nearly a decade as the last time he was jailed during his rath yatra in Bihar in 1992.

The protestors, who will include BJP leaders and activists from across the country, will gather in Ramlila ground, from where they will march towards Parliament, Naqvi said.

Some NDA leaders are also likely to participate in the programme to be led by Advani, he said.

"We were not expecting that we will have to hit the roads so soon after the new government came in. But the anti-people policies of the Manmohan Singh government have compelled us to resort to such a step," the BJP leader said.
