Former Miss India Nafisa Joseph, who was found dead in her apartment in Versova in suburban Mumbai on Thursday night, was reportedly distraught after her planned marriage to a businessman came apart.

According to initial reports, Nafisa's mother spent the better part of Thursday evening trying to console her daughter. They were joined later by Nafisa's friend, designer Poonam Malhotra.

Even as they were trying to calm Nafisa down, she suddenly got up, went to her room and locked herself in.

Alarmed, Nafisa's mother and Poonam called the watchman to the apartment. By the time they broke in, she was dead.

The police said they have not yet made up their mind whether they want to interrogate the boyfriend.

"We will wait for the post-mortem report," a senior police officer said.

Nafisa was 25 and hosted the Style show on the Star World television channel.
