Good governance not enough to fetch votes: Advani
July 04, 2004 20:16 IST
Admitting 'some' mistakes that led to the National Democratic Alliance's rout in the recent elections, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Lal Kishenchand Advani on Sunday said that mere good governance and commitment to development is not enough to garner votes.
"I have always told party workers that in democracy good governance and commitment to development has to be accompanied by prudent politics. One should not stay under the impression that mere good governance and expressing concern for peoples problems will fetch votes," Advani, on his first visit to his Lok Sabha constituency Gandhinagar in Gujarat, said.
He said an elected representative must not take it for granted that he has ample support in his constituency merely because he is airing people's problems in Parliament.
"I have seen several MPs who do not speak a word (in Parliament) and yet are elected repeatedly," he said adding, "Along with taking care of people's problems and development, one should also redress the concern of his own constituency, which also includes the party."
"Party workers, Sangh Parivar and voters, who expect something special from the Bharatiya Janata Party, form three segments of the BJP's constituency and there had been something lacking here," he said adding, "Analysis (of the defeat) is going on and will continue."
