The Chinese government in July 1999 outlawed the practice of Falun Gong -- a Chinese spiritual practice followed by people all over the world -- calling it an 'evil sect' that seeks to undermine 'social stability' and 'state power'.

Falun Gong activists say Chinese authorities have either arrested or sent several Falun Gong practitioners to mental hospitals.
