It is for the first time that the WSF, which started off as a counter to the World Economic Forum held in Davos every year, is being hosted in Asia. The previous three editions were held in Port Allegro, Brazil

The Mumbai edition is hosting people from 130 countries.

Many high-profile social activists and leaders, including Nobel Prize winner Shirin Ebadi and Magsaysay Award winner Aruna Roy, attended the inaugural function.

One of the speakers was Booker Prize winner Arundhati Roy.

"A new imperialism has emerged and a single empire, unipolar economic and military hegemony was being imposed by the United States," she said.
