Honouring the Achievers
In its second year, the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman awards has become a prestigious event and the highest honour that can be bestowed on Non Resident Indians and Persons of Indian Origin.
The award comprising of a medal and scroll is personally given by the prime minister with the deputy prime minister and the external affairs minster in attendance.
For many of those who received the award it has been a rather poignant event. "We come back to take this award as a honour from our homeland. While we will have a duty towards the country we have chosen to live in and represent we can never forget our roots and the values that India has given us. It is our motherland," said the Guyanese President Bharat Jagdeo.
