Britney Spears 'marries' childhood friend

Agencies | January 04, 2004 16:27 IST

Pop star Britney Spears, 22, married childhood friend Jason Allen Alexander early Saturday at the Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas, according to people.com, the online arm of the Time Warner publication.

The Web site said the wedding plan was hatched on Friday night while Spears and Alexander were partying at Ghostbar, a club in the Palms Casino Hotel. The club's bouncers got word that Spears wanted a limo. One of the hotel's lime-green limos was provided, being driven by a hotel bellman, who shuttled the couple to the chapel.

There the couple were told that they could not get married without a licence. The bellman then drove them to the Clark County Marriage Bureau office in the downtown Las Vegas courthouse at some point after 12:30 am on Saturday. They got the licence and came back to the chapel, where they were married.

Spears wore jeans and a baseball cap and Alexander had on a casual shirt, according to people.com. There were no friends or family in attendance and the bellman walked Spears down the aisle.

The 'honeymoon' took place back at a luxury suite at the Palms immediately after the wedding. Then, on Saturday night, Spears dined with her manager, her brother, Palms owner George Maloof and a couple of friends at a hotel steakhouse, the Web site said.

People.com quoted a source close to Spears as saying that it was all a joke that went too far, and that the pop star was making plans to annul the marriage.
